hemmant PROFILE
Located between the Brisbane River and Wynnum Road, Hemmant is a residential and industrial suburb 11 km northeast of central Brisbane. There is fertile soil with light brush along Bulimba Creek's western border, which is also known as Doughboy Creek and Doboy Creek.
Approximately 2,385 people live in Hemmant, a suburb of Brisbane.
Farmers and fruit and vegetable growers sold land in 1858. A number of sugar mills were built in the early 1860s after sugar cane was planted. There was also a co-operative mill in Murarrie (1872) and Gibsons Clydesdale mill (1868).
1864 marked the opening of the first primary school. The creek was originally named Bulimba Creek, but in 1866 it was renamed Doughboy Creek and in 1878 it was renamed Hemmant Creek. Hemmant was the treasurer of the Macalister government during the period 1873-76, and represented the Bulimba electorate. Two years earlier, the district had been named after Hemmant.
In Hemmant, public primary schools are divided into three catchments. Murarrie State School serves the western part of the suburb, Wynnum West State School serves the south-western part of the suburb, and Wynnum State School serves the remaining majority of the suburb. Public secondary schools in Hemmant include Brisbane Bayside State College
