The West End is home to a variety of galleries and artist-run initiatives that showcase the works of local artists. Some of Queensland's most prestigious cultural education institutions are located in South Brisbane, a designated cultural precinct of Brisbane. These include Queensland College of Art, Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, and Queensland Performing Arts Centre. In contrast, because Southbank is primarily a commercial area, many artists and students reside in West End, which is a much larger and residential area.
